"Die Panzerinstandsetzung der
Wehrmacht" by Lukas Friedli
Schneider Armour Research
ISBN 3-935107-08-0
2005 Hardback 297mm x 210mm 208 pages 220 photos
German text
Finally, a
book has been written about the maintenance of
German tanks in World War II. No one can
possibly attain a complete comprehension of the
tank war itself without an understanding of the
time devoted to the recovery and maintenance of
the combat vehicles because for one hour of tank
operations 10 hours of technical service were
required. Contains a huge number of previously
unpublished photographs, as well as diagrams,
charts and documents.
A book worthy
for one’s shelf. It is not only for those
interested in the repair units, you get more
unpublished photos, which can serve as DIORAMA
ideas and for modellers.
In short - a
book any collector/modeller should have. US$57.00 | SGD$94.00 |

Soviet Heavy Breakthrough Tank KV-2
By Jochen Vollert
Tankograd Soviet
Special No 2001.
Soft cover, A4 size, 64 pages
Of the two big
shocks the German found waiting for them when
they invaded Russia in 1941, the heavy KV series
was proof against all but a well-handled 88mm
FLAK gun. Two series were encountered, the 76mm
armed version and the KV-2 with its huge turret
and equally impressive 152mm gun which is
described in this book. Development history is
covered in dual German and English text, but
modellers will appreciate the extensive photo
coverage and plans as much if not more. Plans
include 1/72 four-views showing four different
prototype vehicles, with a 1/35 four view of the
series production 1940 model plus plans of one
of prototype turret. Both prototype and
production versions are well covered in photos,
the former were used in action during the early
period of the Barbarossa campaign as well as the
production tanks. Most photos are not
surprisingly in black and white, many are
soldier's snapshots showing abandoned vehicles
being inspected but there is a series of a
preserved KV-2 in Moscow including a couple of
colour views and the text points out various
non-original features of this museum exhibit.
One a section covers the KW-2 - as they called
it - captured by the Germans and used for
training, including those modified for actual
service with partial plans of the changes made.
A short chapter covers the effective of various
German guns against the KV, and there is a bonus
of three original colour images, though one is
mostly a silhouette view the others are full
vehicle shots.
The big-turret
KV is an impressive subject in real life and
model form, this is a good addition to the
bookshelf of modellers and students of Soviet
AFVs of the Great Patriotic War. Produced to the
same high quality as the parent Tankograd
Militarfahrzeug series.

Post WWII US Tank Transporters M19, M25,
M123, HET70, M746, M911, M1070
US Panzertransporter 1945 bis
Heute
Jochen
Vollert - Tankograd American Special No
3001. Soft cover, A4 size, 64 pages
This is
the first in a new series from Tankograd on
American vehicles, and is similar in format
to Special 5003 on German tank transporters.
It covers all the various tank transporters
from the end of WW2 up to date, starting
with those types used in late WW2 such as
the Diamond T M19, M25 Dragon Wagon and M26
series non-armoured version, the first true
post-war style M123, experimental HET70
intended for the ill-fated
MBT70/Kampfpanzer-70 tank, the HET which was
born from that project, the commercial-based
C-HET and finally the current Heavy
Equipment Transporter System.
Each type
is covered along with the appropriate
trailers, using brief text in German and
English along with photos of the real
vehicles and manual extracts. No scale plans
are included however. The photos show
various different loads being carried, two
of the Diamond T actually show British
vehicles carrying Landing Craft including an
LCM3 which would make a good basis for one
of the several kits now available.
It is not
easy to say more than this, photos are well
produced and the coverage is ideal for
anyone wanting more on these vehicles. As
several were used by armies other than the
USA, it should have wide appeal. (Review

German Military Vehicle Rarities (2) -
Imperial Army, Reichwehr and Wehrmacht
1914-1945
By Henry
Hoppe - Tankograd Wehrmacht Special No 4002.
Soft cover, A4 size, 64 pages
Close on
the heels of the first book on the same
subject, this also covers subjects from the
Great War to the end of the Second World
War, including the inter-war era. All photos
are black and white, well printed on glossy
paper. Each section has a short
introduction, like the captions this is in
German and English.
We start
again with WW1 era cars and lorries, seven
pages for each including a full-page photo
on the inside of the front cover. All photos
are very clear and include details of
markings. Armoured cars in German service
extends to five pages with both home-built
and captured examples, many in Friekorps
makings immediately post-WW1. Interwar
subjects follow, with fifteen pages on "Kubelwagens"
as light civilian cars with minimal military
bodywork were called before the VW took over
the name, and ten pages on the heavier
six-wheeled Einheitzdiesel truck in various
forms. Back to armour again, five pages with
some very clear photos of late SdKfz 250
series armoured halftracks in support forms
with various gun and turret combinations
then eleven pages on the Small Command Tanks
built on Panzer I chassis including
pre-series vehicles, ambulance and radio
control vehicles and some radio-carrying
Panzer I's as well.
Rounding
this off are six pages on four-legged
towing, with various photos of oxen being
used to move different items including bombs
for Stukas, heavy artillery and bogged-down
trucks. (Review from
PMMS website)
